Buying your own plan on the Space Coast & Treasure Coast

The Space Coast runs on launches, and a lot of that work is contract work: engineers, technicians and tradespeople who move from one program to the next, sometimes with a gap between. South of there, the Treasure Coast is growing fast with young families and early retirees.

Melbourne is also home to Medi-Share, one of the best-known Christian health sharing programs, so many people here already know the idea. We compare Medi-Share fairly on our health sharing page, even though we don't place members with it.

Between contracts

If your coverage ends with a contract, you can usually get COBRA or a Marketplace plan through a special enrollment window. Both are worth pricing.

Health sharing can start on the first of any month, and the price doesn't change with income, which helps when one year's pay looks nothing like the next. The limits still apply: pre-existing conditions are phased in, and sharing isn't guaranteed.

If you expect to land a new job with benefits within a few months, a short-term plan or COBRA may be simpler. A licensed agent can explain short-term plans; we don't sell them.

Who it fits here, and who should stay on insurance

Usually a good fit: healthy individuals and families who buy their own plan, self-employed people, early retirees under 65, and households whose income is too high for much Marketplace help.

Usually better on insurance: anyone who qualifies for Florida Medicaid, anyone with a serious ongoing condition who needs it paid for in year one, anyone planning a pregnancy in the next nine months, anyone who needs regular mental-health therapy, and anyone whose tax credit makes an ACA plan cheap.

In this region specifically: If your next contract comes with a good employer plan within weeks, COBRA for the gap may be simpler than joining anything new.

Questions we hear from this region

Can I use Health First, Halifax or Cleveland Clinic with health sharing?

Yes. There's no provider network, so members can use any licensed hospital. Pay as a self-pay patient up to your Initial Unshareable Amount, then submit eligible bills.

My contract ends next month. Can I start right away?

Health sharing starts on the first of a month, so you can line it up with the end of your current coverage. We'll go through the limits first.

Is this health insurance?

No. Health care sharing and direct primary care are alternatives to insurance. Sharing is voluntary and not guaranteed, and it isn't Minimum Essential Coverage. Florida has no state penalty for going without insurance.

Health care sharing
Health care sharing ministries are not insurance and are not regulated as insurance. Sharing of medical expenses is voluntary and not guaranteed. Review each organization's guidelines for details, limitations, and state-specific notices.

Florida notice (§ 624.1265(3), Florida Statutes)
Florida law requires health care sharing organizations to give this notice with their applications and guidelines: “Notice: The organization facilitating the sharing of medical expenses is not an insurance company, and neither its guidelines nor its plan of operation is an insurance policy. Membership is not offered through an insurance company, and the organization is not subject to the regulatory requirements or consumer protections of the Florida Insurance Code. Whether anyone chooses to assist you with your medical bills will be totally voluntary because no other participant is compelled by law to contribute toward your medical bills. As such, participation in the organization or a subscription to any of its documents should never be considered to be insurance. Regardless of whether you receive any payments for medical expenses or whether this organization continues to operate, you are always personally responsible for the payment of your own medical bills.” Health care sharing is not Minimum Essential Coverage.

Direct primary care
Direct primary care is a membership with a primary care practice. Under Florida's direct health care agreement law (§ 624.27, Florida Statutes), these agreements are not health insurance and are not subject to the Florida Insurance Code. A DPC membership does not pay for specialists, hospital care or emergencies, and it is not Minimum Essential Coverage.

Discount plans
THIS PLAN IS NOT INSURANCE and is not intended to replace health insurance. Florida disclosure (§ 636.212, Florida Statutes): The plan is not insurance. The plan provides discounts at certain health care providers for medical services. The plan does not make payments directly to the providers of medical services. The plan member is obligated to pay for all health care services but will receive a discount from those health care providers who have contracted with the discount plan organization. Discount plan organization: Careington International Corporation, 7400 Gaylord Parkway, Frisco, TX 75034. Discount plans are not ACA Qualified Health Plans.
